Time to topdress

The winter weather we have experienced the past couple of months will set us up for a busy spring.

None of us have forgotten the ice storm that hit Kansas in early December followed by several snow storms as well, which has resulted in the majority of farmers being unable to have their wheat topdressed at this point.

Some of you may have been lucky enough to have your topdressing finished, but if not, don’t worry there is still time. That being said I encourage you to come in soon if you have not been able to top dress. Soon the days will come where we all are able to get back in our fields, making it another busy season.

Whether you’re sure or unsure of your crop needs, our Farmway field reps are ready to assist you. Now is a good time for a field rep to scout your fields. If you do need chemical to control your winter annuals, Finesse mixed with MCPA would be a good choice.

If you find that you have cheat, Olympus may be applied in the spring. If you have both cheat and broadleaves it’s best to mix Glean or 2-4D with some surfactant. We want to make sure that the cheat and wheat is actively growing when considering application. Also remember that wheat should be at least at the two leaf stage when considering applying most of the chemicals mentioned above.

If you don’t feel like you need chemical on your wheat or your wheat may not have much growth, dry fertilizer may be an option for you. If you choose to apply dry fertilizer, let Farmway custom apply it for you with one of our air machines.

Our air machines give you the most precise application of fertilizer. Stop by or contact us to map out your acres now. When the weather permits were ready to get in the fields.

Don’t forget about your waterways and brome fields. Now is a good time to fertilize them too. Also there is a possibility of a wet spring, which could lead to increased diseases. You may want to check with your field rep about the need for application of a fungicide to your wheat. When needed, the timing for this application is crucial and will benefit your crop.

Whatever your needs may be, come into your local Farmway location or contact your field rep. We are all here to help you make the most out of your crops.
